A bad run is still a run

On my long run this weekend, the stars were just not aligned.

My running group ran on Saturday, and because of scheduling issues, I had to do it alone, Sunday instead. And, it was very hot outside and I didn't remember water. Plus, I just wasn't feeling it. Ever have one of those runs?

After doing 4 miles, with 2 miles left on my trail to get me home to my doorstep, I did something I have never done, not since I began seriously running last winter: I walked. I walked for a mile.

Then, after doing that, I did something else I haven't done in my history of runs: I jogged home. Not ran, but jogged. Like an 11-12 minute mile.

I wasn't proud of my Garmin read that day, but I was still glad I'd laced up that morning. Even though that walk 1/run 5 journey didn't do much to boost my runner's ego, hey, it was better than skipping it altogether, right? And it certainly burned off breakfast.

  1. Hi! I check your blog every so often and I find your stories so true and funny! Anyhow...I am wondering what is next for you. Full marathon? I just finished (and I mean finished 5:42) my first! I have been running for 15 years but never thought I could do a marathon but I had a friend do one and she was signing up for the LA Marathon (were from chicago) and since I had never done one or been to LA I said what the heck! I strained my hip flexor 5 weeks into my 17 week program (technichally I have been training for 15 yrs but this was the "official" program) and was out for 8 weeks, had 4 weeks of training and lo and behold it was marathon time. I was really hard on myself for my poor time and for having to take a couple of 5 minute walking breaks in the last 6 miles but in the end....I made it all 26.2 miles! Now its your turn!

  2. p.s. the answer to the runners trot IS immodium...3 tabs to be exact (intial dosing is 2 tabs) taken 2 hrs before race time!

  3. Wow, Colleen, that is amazing! Congratulations on an incredible accomplishment! I am hoping to run a full in the spring of next year. I'm still running regularly but spring/summer is kind of "off season" or 5k season in South Florida, and I'd really like to train for a full in the winter/early spring of 2011. I think a few five minute breaks during a 26.2 mile is really nothing--what you accomplished is my dream! Thanks for posting and for the inspiration. Will also have to try immodium BEFORE hand next race.
